How to use the beads

Tesbih has 99 beads each symbolizing the ninety nine names of Allah in Islam. Sometimes only 33 beads are used, in this case, the Tesbih would be cycled 3 times to reach 99. Repeated throughout the first thirty three beads is the main phrase “SubhanAllah” translated as “Praise be to God.” In the next thirty three beads say the phrase, “Glory be to God,” or “Alhumdulillah” and for the last thirty three final beads repeat “Allahuekber” or God is most great. These final repetitions bring the total number of prayers to one-hundred as based on the dictation of the Holy Quran.

Various materials are used to make tasbih. The most common are wood, olive seeds, plastic, coconut, pebbles, etc. But there more expensive materials are used as amber, cornelian, ivory, jade, meerschaum, pearls, rhino horn or other gemstones. Wooden beads are made from; Agalloch, Ebony, Olive Tree, Rose Tree, Rosewood, etc. Today, artisans continue making manual tesbihs but their numbers are fewer. Some craftsmen were working even for months to make antique tesbih to preserve the heritage.
